The Root Cause of a Root Canal and its Importance to Preserve Your Smile

The mention of a root canal may have you extremely worried.  Will the procedure be painful? Is it expensive?  How will this impact my health? Let’s explore the why you may need a root canal, the benefits and the costs.

More than 15 million teeth are saved and treated each year by the endodontic procedure, known as a root canal. Endo is the Greek word for inside, odont the Greek word for tooth, thus the endodontic therapy/root canal removes infected or damaged pulp (nerve, blood vessels, connective tissue) from inside a tooth. The process disinfects the tooth, sealing it to save the tooth and prevent further infection.

When is it Needed:

·         Evidence of deep decay that reaches the pulp
·         Persistent tooth pain (especially spontaneous or with hot/cold sensitivity)
·         Swelling or abscess formation, swollen or tender gums
·         Trauma that exposes or damages the pulp
·         Recurrent infections around a previously treated tooth

What Happens During the Procedure:

·         Local anesthesia to numb the tooth
·         Rubber dam placed to isolate and keep the tooth clean/dry
·         Access opening through the crown to reach the pulp chamber
·         Removal of infected /dead pulp
·         Irrigation with disinfectant solution
·         Filling/sealing canals
·         Temporary or permanent restoration/often a crown is recommended for later strength

Recovery and Pain:

·         Most patients report mild to moderate discomfort after anesthesia wears off.  Ibuprofen or acetaminophen usually sufficient to handle the discomfort
·         Sever lingering pain or swelling should prompt a return to the dentist
·         Short recovery (few days) sensitivity until final restoration is in place

 Success and Prognosis:

·         High success-typically 85-95% when properly performed and restored
·         Teeth with complex anatomy, cracks or persistent infection may have less success
·         Good oral hygiene and proper restoration improve longevity

Costs and Specialists:

·         General dentists perform many root canals, complex cases are referred to an endodontist.
·         Cost varies by tooth type and region. Molars are more expensive than front teeth. Insurance often covers a portion of the expense.

Root canals are an effective dental treatment to save a compromised tooth and generally the less expensive alternative. Your natural teeth are irreplaceable!!  Unlike artificial replacements, your natural teeth are designed to function harmoniously with your surrounding tissues. They provide superior chewing ability, speech clarity, and help maintain the unique bone structure of your face.
