Summer Vacation Means Travel, Fun & Adventures…But How to Handle Dreaded Dental Emergency
Ah the long winter is over and its summer time…onto to all the fabulous, exciting travel plans, family vacations and adventures. We all look forward to new experiences, but a dental emergency may turn our dream getaway into a stressful situation. Here are a few tips if you find yourself or a family member dealing with the dreaded dental emergency while traveling.
Dental emergencies can happen at any time and being out of town adds an extra layer of stress, when addressing the issue.
Common Dental Emergencies and Helpful Steps to Manage the Issue
Toothache or Sensitivity - Nagging pain that can be caused by pressure during air travel, an existing cavity or infection.
Management:
1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
2. Floss gently to ensure there is no debris causing the pain.
3. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort.
Lost Filling or Crown - Often attributed to biting a hard food or sticky snack foods compromising older dental work.
Management:
1. Keep the area clean by rinsing with warm water.
2. Temporary dental cement (available at pharmacies) can be used to cover the exposed area.
3. Avoid chewing on the side with the lost filling or crown
4. If needed consult with a dentist for a temporary solution until you are back home.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Management:
1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
2. Save any broken pieces, if possible.
3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth to reduce swelling.
Cracked Tooth - While similar to a Chipped or Broken tooth, the symptom is generally a sensitivity when consuming foods with temperature changes or sweet foods. If not addressed this could lead to infection.
Management:
Similar to Chipped or Broken, but if symptom persists, evaluate the tooth with a Dental Professional as a cracked tooth may mean a compromised tooth.

2. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage pain.
3. Seek dental care as soon as possible.

Also, pack a few over-the-counter aids such as dental wax, ibuprofen, floss, dental soft picks and your dentist’s contact info.
